VALLEJO, Calif. — Following the Jan. 8 special board meeting, the Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD) Board of Education has updated its operations to ensure greater efficiency and focus on the district's strategic priorities.

Board Meetings Return to Wednesdays

In response to staff feedback, the Board has voted to move its regular meeting day back to Wednesdays from previously scheduled Thursdays. The district acknowledges that the Collective Bargaining Unit contract with the Vallejo Education Association (VEA) includes in Article 1 a line that states, “Thursdays are recognized as VEA days.” To that end, the governance team consulted with district legal services to interpret this language and learned that it does not preclude the Governing Board from holding its public meetings on Thursdays. However, in a good faith effort to accommodate all, the Governing Board decided to move back to a Wednesday board meeting schedule for 2025.

Approval of Consolidated Leadership Role

To streamline operations and optimize resources, the Board approved a new job description for a consolidated leadership role that combines the responsibilities of the chief business official and the assistant operations superintendent. This strategic consolidation reflects the district’s commitment to efficient administration and effective resource management while addressing the evolving needs of VCUSD.

Introduction of Executive Director of Special Education Position

Recognizing the critical importance of supporting students with special needs, the Board approved a job description for the newly created executive director of special education position. This role will provide leadership and oversight for all special education programs, ensuring the delivery of high-quality services to students and families while promoting equity and inclusivity across the district. This role will replace the former position of director of special education, who recently resigned.

Superintendent Ruben Aurelio emphasized the importance of these changes:
“These updates reflect our district’s commitment to continuous improvement, operational efficiency, and meeting the needs of all students and families. By returning to a familiar meeting schedule and refining our leadership structure, we are taking important steps to ensure that VCUSD remains focused on academic excellence and community engagement.”

The first Board meeting on the new Wednesday schedule will be held on Jan. 15 at 5 p.m. for closed sessions and 6 p.m. for open sessions. The public is encouraged to attend.
